Literature in modern China has closely reflected developments in Chinese society, picturing the social and political climate through the high spirit of art. On the eve of the founding of the People's Republic (October 1949), it was stricken by Mao Zedong's (1893-1976) speeches at the Yan'an Forum of Literature and Art in 1942. It was largely a reflection of political campaigns and ideological battles.
