FACTS & FIGURES
Friedrich Engels was born on 28 November 1820 in Barmen, Prussia. He was the eldest son of a German cotton textile industrialist. He was brought up in a protestant environment but soon he developed atheistic beliefs. Although he did not finish high school in order to work at his family business, Engels was keen on reading the philosophy of G.W.F. Hegel (1770-1831), he published poetry and learned languages fluently. He was soon leading a double life as a businessman by day and a radical at night. He began a career as a political journalist under the pseudonym Friedrich Oswald.
