FACTS & FIGURES
The Patriotic Health Campaign was a series of campaigns aimed to improve sanitation, hygiene, as well as certain attack diseases in China. It was founded in the early 1950s by Mao Zedong (1893-1976). In a period of urgent political and social transition, creating a national public health system and eliminating entrenched diseases was an obvious first step in improving the lives of the nation’s people. The government began initiating massive vaccination campaigns against the plague and smallpox, vaccinating nearly 300 million people. Particular efforts were devoted in the health campaigns to improving water quality through such measures as deep-well construction and human-waste treatment.
