FACTS & FIGURES

The three surtaxed pictorial Austria stamps shown above were issued on October 10, 1950 to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Carinthian Plebiscite. After World War I, the Carinthian territory (with both German-speaking and Slovene-speaking population) was claimed by both Austria, and the newly created Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. After armed clashes and violent incidents, a plebiscite was decided to be held on October 10, 1920 to determine annexation by either Austria or the Slavic Kingdom. The propaganda by both sides was intense prior to the vote. Austria emphasized the economic benefits of maintaining the unity of the Klagenfurt Basin, and the brotherhood between the Slovene and German speaking peoples of Carinthia.
