In 1931, the Graf Zeppelin was preparing for its historic research flight to the Arctic (Polarfahrt 1931) in July. Commander Hugo Eckener wanted to practice flying the Graf through harsh weather conditions and a flight through the Alps, facing the treacherous air currents and constantly negotiating the heights, was just the challenge Eckener needed. A special flight from Liechtenstein to Switzerland was arranged and the flight would be funded by the profits from postage sales issued exclusively for this occasion.
