Six values (3 Pf., 5 Pf. 6 Pf., 8 Pf., 12 Pf., and 25 Pf.) of the Hindenburg medallion definitive stamp series were printed with black borders, as a sign of mourning, to commemorate the death of the President of Germany, General Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg, who died on the 2nd of August, 1934. Hindenburg remained in office until his death at the age of 86 from lung cancer at his home in Neudeck, East Prussia.
