The “Anschluss” was the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany in March 1938. A union between Germany and Austria had been forbidden under the terms of the Versailles Treaty (1919). Hitler however, had always seen Austria as being part of Germany. He, himself, had been born in the Austrian town of Brannau, but for all his life Hitler considered himself German. Austria was annexed into the German Third Reich on 12 March 1938. There had been several years of pressure by supporters in both Austria and Germany for the "Heim ins Reich" (Home into the Empire) movement. The aim of this policy was to convince all of the ethnically German people who were living outside of the Third Reich that they should strive to bring these regions "home" into Greater Germany.
