FACTS & FIGURES

Labour Day is an annual holiday to celebrate the achievements of workers. It has its origins in the labour union movement, specifically the eight-hour day movement, which advocated eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation, and eight hours for rest. During National Socialism, May Day (Der Erste Mai) celebrations played an important role for the Regime. With all trade unions abolished and their leaders either killed or imprisoned, any relationship to work or the worker’s movement was stripped entirely from the festive events. The German Labour Front (Deutsche Arbeitsfront - DAF) was in the era of National Socialism the sole unit Association of workers and employers. Since 1934, the NSDAP had declared the 1st of May an official public holiday of the German People (Nationaler Feiertag des deutschen Volkes) and was celebrated as “National Labor Day” (Tag der nationalen Arbeit).
