FACTS & FIGURES
In 1926, Roald Amundsen (1872-1928), Lincoln Ellsworth (1880-1951) and Umberto Nobile (1885-1978) flew with 13 others in the airship “Norge” from Ny-Ålesund at Svalbard, Norway, over the North Pole to Teller in Alaska. In autumn 1925 Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen sought out Nobile to collaborate on a flight to the North Pole – at that time still an unreached goal for aviators – using one of Nobile’s craft. With Amundsen as expedition leader, Ellsworth as an important sponsor and Nobile as the airship’s constructor and pilot, the name for the planned flight became “The Amundsen-Ellsworth-Nobile Transpolar Flight”. With this flight, the Arctic Ocean was crossed for the first time.
