The United States Post Office issued two commemorative stamps to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the first group of Norwegian immigrants in New York on October 9, 1825 with the ship ‘Restaurasjonen’. The arrival of this ship is generally considered the first organized emigration of Norwegian-Americans to the United States. This series promoted the Norse-American Centennial Celebration held in Minneapolis and St. Paul, June 6-June 9, 1925.
Emigration from Norway to North America started in 1825, during a period of particularly fierce religious strife in Norway. On July 5, 1825, a group of six dissenting families, seeking a haven from the official Norwegian state church, set sail from Stavanger in an undersized ship, the ‘Restaurasjonen’. The ‘Restaurasjonen’ was a small sloop, or as it is called in Norway ‘Hardanger Jakt’. She was built in Hardanger in 1801 and she was mainly used for freighting herring and corn.
