FACTS & FIGURES
By 1931, Joseph Stalin had realized that if Russia was to become a key player in the global market, the country needed to industrialize rapidly and increase production. Like other nations in the early 20th century, Russia began researching and developing its own airships. Stalin demanded for a squadron of airships built rapidly to a tight budget – in part to demonstrate the superiority of a coordinated workers’ effort over profit-driven construction in the West. Head of the Soviet Airship Program was the famous Italian General Umberto Nobile (1885-1978).
