A beautiful 2-Pages Pack to mount the classical Issue to commemorate the Aerial rescue of steamship Chelyuskin crew and scientific expedition in 1934. Back in 1933 the steamship Chelyuskin (“Челюскин”), with over a hundred passengers on board and heavy cargo bound for Wrangel Island, left Murmansk and headed east. The expedition's task was to prove the possibility of supply ships, not just ice-breakers, to manage the Northern Sea Route in a single navigation season.
Chelyuskin managed to get through most of the Northern Route before it was caught in the ice fields of the East Siberian Sea, in mid-October. It drifted in the ice pack for almost four months before sinking on February 13, 1934, crushed by the icepacks in the Chukchi Sea. All necessary supplies were placed in advance on the deck and thrown on the ice. People made a tent camp on the ice, “Camp Schmidt”, built a makeshift airstrip and lived there until help arrived...
