Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, usually referred to in English as Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian novelist regarded as one of the world's greatest of all time. Tolstoy was born on September 9, 1828, in his ancestral estate at Yasnaya Polyana, in the Tula Province of Russia. He was the fourth of five children in a wealthy family of Russian landed gentry. His parents died when he was a child, so he and his siblings were brought up by their relatives.

Educated at home by tutors, Tolstoy enrolled in the University of Kazan in 1844 as a student of oriental languages. His poor record soon forced him to transfer to the less-demanding law faculty. After leaving the university in 1847 without a degree, Tolstoy returned to Yasnaya Polyana, where he planned to educate himself, to manage his estate, and to improve the lot of his serfs.
