World War II (1939-1945) found Vietnam being part of the French Colony, known as Indochinese Union. Since September 1940 Indochina was a French-administered possession of the Empire of Japan. In May 1941, Ho Chi Minh (1890-1969), founder of the Indochina Communist Party and president of North Vietnam from 1945 to 1969 formed in China an organization that led the struggle for Vietnamese independence called Viet Minh.
