Henry Norman Bethune was a medical doctor, an innovator but above all a great humanist. He was born into a prominent family in Canada in 1890. Son of a Reverend, Bethune became a surgeon and graduated from the University of Toronto in 1916. He interrupted his studies twice; once to volunteer as a labourer-teacher at Frontier College and the second time to serve as a stretcher-bearer joining the Canadian Army in France during the First World War.
