The ‘Luna programme’ was a series of robotic spacecraft missions sent to the Moon by the Soviet Union between 1959 and 1976, directed by Sergei Korolev (1907-1966), a brilliant aeronautical engineer and spacecraft designer. The Luna missions were designed to collect any possible information about the Moon and its environment. In January 1959 the first spacecraft Luna 1 was launched at the Moon, but missed and went into orbit between the Sun and Mars.
