Latvia is a small country located in the Baltic region of Northern Europe. LZ-127 first appeared over Latvia during the Round-the-World Flight in 1929. On September 11, 1930, the Graf Zeppelin did overfly Latvian territory (near the city of Daugavpils) en route to and from Moscow. During this flight there were newspaper reports that the airship had been shot at while crossing into Soviet air space. Latvian border guards reported that the Soviet border guards had opened fire upon it. Later, these were explained as ‘gunshots of salute’.
