DR 1913 - Liegnitz Flights of Airship ‘Sachsen’ (LZ 17)
English Text

LZ-17 made its first flight on June 9, 1913. “Sachsen” was the first airship commanded by Ernst A. Lehmann (1886-1937; later commander of the “Hindenburg” and victim of the catastrophe at Lakehurst, N.J.), who received his airship training in the ship from Dr. Hugo Eckener (1868-1954).

Between the 5th and 9th of November 1913, “Sachsen” undertook three air mail and passenger flights at the Province of Silesia. On November 5, the “Sachsen” flew from Dresden to Liegnitz, on November 8 it flew from Liegnitz to Frankenstein and back, and on November 9 she flew from Liegnitz to Haida in Bohemia and finally back to Dresden. For use in air mail carried on these flights, two special air mail stamps were issued. Due to error in printing, the stamps were produced in two shades of russet. The paper itself is printed yellow.
