FACTS & FIGURES
Set was issued to commemorate the ‘Memorial Festival of the Lost Colonies’ which coincided with the 50th anniversary of the first hoisting of the German Flag in the colonies in 1884 and the establishment of the German Colonial Empire. These stamps present a direct propaganda link to German ‘Lebensraum’ - Living Space - an important component of Nazi ideology. It served as the motivation for the expansionist policies of Nazi Germany, aiming to provide extra space for the growth of the German population, for a Greater Germany.
The German Colonial Empire (Deutsches Kolonialreich) was an overseas domain as part of the German Empire from about 1884 until 1919. Germany's overseas empire was dismantled following defeat in World War I. With the concluding Treaty of Versailles, German colonies were divided between Belgium, the United Kingdom, France, and Japan with the determination not to see any of them returned to Germany.
