After the defeat of the German Empire in World War I, the Saar ( Saargebiet) industrialized territory was separated from Germany and administered by the League of Nations. During this time, its approximately 800,000 inhabitants, local industrial infrastructure and Saar's coal mines came under French control under a League of Nations mandate. After 15 years of League of Nations administration, a referendum was scheduled to take place in the territory. The Versailles Treaty stipulated that a popular referendum was to be held fifteen years later to determine the region's future.
