On July 5, 1938 two airmail stamps were issued to commemorate the 100th birthday of Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin , German army officer, inventor and builder of the rigid dirigible airship.
Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, in full Ferdinand Adolf August Heinrich, Graf von Zeppelin was born on July 8, 1838 in Konstanz at the Bodensee, Grand Duchy of Baden, Germany. He entered the Prussian army in 1858 and served in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, during which he was commended for bravery. In 1863 he visited the United States as a military observer for the King of Württemburg, where he traveled with the Union Army during the American Civil War. It was in that service that the young count had gone aloft in military observation balloons. In 1891 he retired from the Prussian army with the position of lieutenant-general to devote himself to the design and construction of motor-driven airships.
