On August 9, 1940, the Reichspost issued a commemorative stamp to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of German Sovereignty over the island of Helgoland (Heligoland).
Helgoland lies in the German Bay of the North Sea, in the angle between the coast of Schleswig-Holstein and the estuaries of the Jade, Weser, and Elbe rivers, 65 km offshore northwest of Cuxhaven. It consists of two islands: the populated triangular 1 km2 main island (Hauptinsel) to the west, and the Düne to the east. The former is what the place name "Helgoland" is normally used to refer to.
