FACTS & FIGURES
In February 1945, the Reichspost issued a stamp to commemorate the immobilization of the Volkssturm (People's Storm Troops). By late 1944, the collapse of the Third Reich was inevitable. The Western Allies were closing in on Germany from the west while the Red Army was advancing from the east. As a last resort, Hitler wished to mobilize speedily the last manpower resources of the German nation, the Volkssturm, a national militia designed to supplement the defense of the homeland. The Volkssturm was a military formation created by citizens during the final phase of the War. It was founded on Adolf Hitler's Decree on October 18, 1944, and it was staffed by conscripted males between the ages of 16 and 60 that were not already serving in some military unit.
