John Ericsson was born in Sweden on July 31, 1803. At the age of 17 he joined the Swedish army, received officer’s education and training, and worked as a military engineer and cartographer. In 1826 Ericsson was granted a leave of absence from the army and immigrated to England. In England he formed a partnership with John Braithwaite.
